Parleu

Terms of use

The agreement between you and Parleu when you use the app and this website. In plain language, your mandatory consumer rights where you live always remain.

About these terms

parleu is run by Erik Cupal, a private individual, not a registered business. Contact details: Legal notice. By starting to learn, creating an account, or signing in, you agree to these terms. How we handle your data: Privacy policy.

The service

Parleu teaches languages with story lessons, word review, grammar, pronunciation, Speak conversations, podcasts, and books. Some features work offline. We keep improving the service, so features may change; we won’t remove anything central to the free plan without telling you first.

Free plan and paid plan

The free plan costs nothing and doesn’t require payment details. What it includes is shown on the Pricing page and in the app. It may change over time, and we’ll give you notice before reducing what’s included.

A paid plan is coming, but you can’t buy it yet. Before you can pay for anything, we’ll show you the price, what’s included, how it renews and how to cancel, and your right to withdraw from the purchase, in subscription terms you accept at that time.

A promo code may give you access to more of Parleu, either permanently or for a set time. It has no cash value and can’t be sold.

Your account

You must be at least 16 years old to use parleu. If the law where you live sets a higher age to agree to these terms on your own, you must be that age or have your parent’s or guardian’s consent.

You can start without an account: Get started creates a guest account on this device. It’s deleted after 30 days without use. To continue past the first episode or use Speak, sign in with Google to keep your progress.

An account is for one person. Keep your Google sign-in safe. You’re responsible for what happens in your account unless someone used it without your permission and you tell us.

AI in parleu

Lessons, stories, translations, and explanations are written with the help of AI language models and checked against dictionaries and grammar references. The pictures are made with AI image models, and the voices are synthetic.

Your Speak partners are AI conversation partners: characters from the story, played live by Google’s Gemini. They aren’t real people. Word explanations, hints, and feedback are also made by AI.

AI can be wrong. Use parleu to learn a language, not as legal, medical, financial, or other professional advice. parleu prepares you for exams but doesn’t issue certificates, isn’t affiliated with any exam body, and can’t promise a result.

Fair use

AI conversation partners are real AI models, and every minute of conversation costs us money, so there are fair-use limits:

  • Free plan: 30 turns of AI conversation practice to try, total. A turn is one thing you say.
  • Paid plan: up to 100 minutes of conversation in any 7-day period. Only talking counts, yours and your partner's; pauses and silence don't.
  • Other AI features, such as word explanations and audio, are for your reasonable personal use, with daily limits that normal learning won't reach.
  • We may change these limits. We'll let you know before a change affects you.

Strong language and adult topics

The stories speak as people really do, including slang and swearing, with each strong word labeled. Settings > Language register lets you choose how much you hear: Neutral (soft forms only), Real (the default), or Sense filtre ("no filter"), which requires separate confirmation that you’re 16 or older and adds explicit words and pictures with implied nudity. In Speak, intimate topics with a partner require further confirmation that you’re 18 or older. No picture or conversation in Parleu is sexually explicit.

Using Parleu fairly

Please don’t:

  • break the law or use Parleu to harass, threaten, or harm anyone;
  • use Speak to produce illegal, hateful, or sexual content involving minors, get around its safeguards, or share other people’s private details;
  • upload books, audio, or files you don’t have the right to use, or share them beyond what these terms allow;
  • get around plan limits, Speak limits, or upload limits, for example by using multiple guest accounts;
  • copy Parleu’s content in bulk, scrape it, overload the service, probe it for weaknesses without our agreement, or reverse engineer it beyond what the law allows.

Your content and ours

What you add stays yours: books and audio you upload, words you save, and what you say in Speak. You give us permission to store and process it only to run Parleu for you (for example, to transcribe audio or answer you in Speak) and, for a title you share with your family circle, to show it to those accounts. Uploads are for your own study: only add copies you have the right to use that way.

Podcasts belong to their publishers. parleu lists public feeds and plays episodes from the publishers’ own servers; we don’t control them and aren’t responsible for what they say. A feed you add may become visible to others in the podcast list once enough people follow it.

Everything else in parleu (lessons, stories, pictures, recordings, the app) belongs to parleu or its licensors. You may use it for your own learning, but you may not copy or redistribute it. Sources and licenses: Sources and credits.

Availability and responsibility

We work to keep Parleu running and accurate, but the free plan is provided as is: it may be interrupted for maintenance or other problems, and we can’t promise it will be error-free.

Nothing in these terms limits our responsibility where the law doesn’t allow it—for example, for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, intent or gross negligence, or for your mandatory consumer rights. If you live in the EU or the UK, we are responsible for losses you suffer that are a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care, but not for losses that weren’t foreseeable.

Where the law allows, we are not responsible for indirect losses, lost profits, or lost data you could have kept with Download my data. For the free plan, our total responsibility is limited to 50 euros.

Ending

You can stop at any time and delete your account in Settings. It will be erased after 7 days unless you restore it before then.

We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these terms, after a warning unless the harm is urgent. If we close the free service as a whole, we’ll tell you at least 30 days in advance so you can download your data.

Changes to these terms

If we make a change to these terms that matters to you, we’ll tell you in the app or by email at least 30 days before it takes effect, unless the law or your safety requires a sooner change. If you don’t agree, you can stop using parleu and delete your account.

Law and disputes

These terms are governed by Spanish law. This choice never takes away the protection you have under the mandatory consumer laws of the country where you live, and you can bring a claim in the courts where you live.
